Lady Gaga Close To Besting Britney Spears In Twitter Followers

Spears is the world's top tweeter, but Gaga is hot on her heels.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Lady Gaga's near-dominance of all things social media is reaching a pivotal point: Mother Monster is poised to topple Britney Spears as the most-followed Twitter user.
According to the social-media website FameCount, which tracks the most popular entities on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, Spears is the world's top tweeter, with more than 5.6 million followers, but Gaga is right on her heels. As of Thursday afternoon (August 19), Spears' followers numbered 5,646,028, while Gaga's online army of "little monsters" was 5,635,460 strong. The ranking could switch very soon, since Gaga has netted around 600,000 new followers this month, while Spears pulled in about 200,000. The site also lists Gaga as the most popular online entity worldwide, with more than 16 million Facebook fans and 330,000 YouTube subscribers.
Gaga's pre-eminent Twitter status is just the latest milestone marking the pop phenom's powerful viral presence. Last month, Gaga soared past the leader of the free world, President Obama, in Facebook fans. The "Alejandro" singer was also the first living person to notch 10 million fans on the intensely popular social-networking website.
Despite runaway online popularity that rivals her chart-topping music sales, Gaga still has to fend off competition from other pop stars. In July, Justin Bieber bested Gaga for the most-watched music video on YouTube with more than 245,746,720 views for the Ludacris-assisted collabo "Baby." Gaga's futuristic-disco extravaganza "Bad Romance" was close behind with 245,596,709. Bieber has since widened the gap, however, with "Baby" scoring 292,285,435 views to Gaga's 264,533,336 YouTube spins at press time.
Gaga's viral presence is undeniable, but the singer's outsize fan support has yielded results in the form of cold hard cash as well. After circling the globe on her Monster Ball Tour since November of last year, the seat-filling tour is on track to gross $200 million worldwide by April 2011.

Ke$ha Throws A Desert Party In 'Take It Off' Video

Pop star's new music video finds her and her pals taking over an abandoned motel and living it up.By Jocelyn Vena

Glitter: Check. Dance-ready pals: Check. White fur jacket: Check. Desert setting: Check. Ke$ha has all the ingredients for a huge bash in place — and not only is she throwing a party, she's using that setting as the backdrop for the new clip for her single "Take It Off."

Arriving on the scene on her motorcycle and meeting up with her crew, Ke$ha — dressed in short shorts, a tank top and one bedazzled choker — manages to embrace her inner party animal and throw a neon-colored party at an abandoned motel in the middle of nowhere.
While the concept of "a lot of pretty people dancing at dusk" is pretty simple, the neon colors manage to amp up the video, as does the colored sand that's thrown around in the air and mixed with glitter. Ke$ha, who very liberally applies both the glitter and the sand to her body in the video, manages to be both sexy and fun while rolling around in the desert.
The video gets interesting towards the end, when Ke$ha magically has a zipper down the front of her body and pulls it down, allowing her to apparently strip herself down to the glitter and sand she was partying in.
"It's my favorite video, I think, ever, that I've done because I get to get really dirty in glitter [and] sand, and we all get naked because we're just, like, taking it all off," she told MTV News last month.
"It's also about taking off your inhibitions and being raw and real," Ke$ha continued. "And then we start tearing each other apart into pieces, and we're all made out of glittery magic dust ... stardust."

Robert Pattinson Leaves Trousdale Nightclub

Rob Pattinson was spotted leaving an Emmy after party at Trousdale nightclub last night. The 'Twilight' star is sporting a beard - perhaps enjoying his last few weeks of sparkle-free facial features? The actors all head back to begin filming 'Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn' Part 1 at the beginning of October.
He always looks so miserable over the attention he gets, I feel bad for him. I mean, last night was a given that the place would be crawling with photographers for the Emmy coverage, but he seems truly stressed out by the attention. :(

Beyonce's 'Why Don't You Love Me' Almost Didn't Happen, Bama Boyz Say

'It was the last one we expected her to pick,' song's producers reveal.By Steven Roberts

If you've listened to Beyoncé's "Why Don't You Love Me" and inexplicably felt like you were a spy in the middle of an international conspiracy, then don't feel like you're weird. When producers the Bama Boyz, created the song, that's exactly how they felt.

The Grammy-nominated production trio of Eddie Smith, Jesse J. Rankins and Jonathan Wells are signed to Mathew Knowles' (a.k.a. Beyoncé's father) Music World Entertainment, and have worked with B for some time. In fact, the song's inspiration came from the time they spent in London at the end of her B-Day Tour.
"After the tour left, we stayed over in the UK, because we fell in love with it. It was a big thing for us, being out there, and we watch a lot of movies, so we all felt like Jason Bourne, to be quite honest with you," Rankins said. "We felt like James Bond or something. We were running around on like — this is kind of embarrassing — pretend missions in our head and we felt like we needed a theme song for it."
He said they started working on the song that would become "Why Don't You Love Me" in London, and completed it once they were back Stateside. They said that the song's structure was unusual, but luckily it ended up in the right person's hands.
"What happen was [B's sister] Solange called us and was like, 'Hey, I'm going to write a couple of records for my sister. Send me some tracks!' We had a lot of bangers that felt more like Beyoncé, but we actually put that one last on the CD because we figured 'This is not Beyoncé,' but we knew Solange would like it," Rankins said. "So we stuck that one there — but we battled with even putting it on there, because it was the last one we expected her to pick. So Solange sent it back with a song written to it, and it was the 'Why Don't You Love Me' lyrics. The song was hot!"
The Bama Boyz met in junior high and high school and linked back up in college at Alabama A&M University, where they threw parties as DJs. They eventually landed internships at Sony Music before hooking up with Mathew Knowles.
Despite their name, the group's sound doesn't necessarily scream Alabama. Their EP, Socially Awkward, is filled with music that can't readily be classified as electro, R&B or hip-hop.
"We actually like the fact that our name is the Bamaz — people say, 'Ah, they're going to sound like this.' But then we you hear [us], you're like 'What? Are they really from Alabama?' It's just like a gumbo of lots of different genres and styles."

Mandy Moore's 'Tangled' Heroine Not 'Typical Disney Princess'

'She's very independent,' actress/singer tells MTV News of new Rapunzel.By Kara Warner

Rapunzel (voiced by Many Moore) in "Tangled"

While the fall-to-Thanksgiving film season is usually rife with Oscar bait, it's also prime time for releasing family films. One such movie is the highly anticipated "Tangled," Disney's updated and traditionally animated take on Rapunzel, starring the vocal talents of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi.

Kicking off our Fall Movie Preview, we bring you a delightful chat we had with the ever-gracious and lovely Moore, during which she discussed non-typical femmes fatales, singing in front of a 65-piece orchestra and Levi's powerful pipes.
MTV: How is Rapunzel different from the typical femme-fatale characters?
Mandy Moore: She's not the typical femme fatale or the typical Disney princess even, because: A) She doesn't know she's a princess. I think she sort of has this inkling that something isn't quite right in her life, [but] she's just really sort of motivated to find out what else is out there beyond this crazy tower she's lived in for 18 years. Having said that, she's very independent, she can take care of herself, and she's definitely come up with really entertaining ways to keep herself busy.
MTV: Is the Disney take on Rapunzel the same as the original fairy tale?
Moore: Pretty much. She has an overprotective mother who tells her she's not missing out on anything, and it's a big bad world out there and it's too scary and dangerous and she'll be eaten alive, literally, if she decides to venture out into the world.
MTV: What was your reaction to Disney changing the film's original title, in an effort to lure in more young boys?
Moore: I think I was initially a bit taken aback, only because people know the story of Rapunzel, so when you say you're working on "Rapunzel," it's sort of a no-brainer, you don't have to explain it to people. But as the title sort of sunk in, I understood the decision behind changing it. The movie is so great and so cute, and people are going to see the trailer and know what the story is about. I guess you sort of have to leave it up to the brains at the top. They know what they're doing.
MTV: What can you tell us about this particular story? Can you tease any romance?
Moore: She sort of comes face to face with this stranger who precariously ends up in her tower, and he's very handsome [and] he knows it. He's quite the ladies' man, if you will. Somehow, they get roped into going on this adventure together and start to see a different side of one another, and potentially a romance ensues. There's [also] a few musical moments.
MTV: What was that experience like, recording with legendary Disney composer Alan Menken?
Moore: That was fun. I'm definitely the quintessential girl who grew up watching "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin" and the like, so it was probably one of the coolest things I've done thus far, being in the studio with Alan Menken and a 65-piece orchestra. It was such a moment in time. I kept telling myself: "Just be in the moment. Remember this. You're going to want to think about this for years to come." It was really magical and sort of everything you'd want a Disney animated experience to be. As one of the players involved, I was like, "Oh my God!" ... To watch it all come to life, because so much of your job — you're looking at storyboards, you're having things explained to you, but there's nothing tangible to see or get, it has to form in your imagination, which is one of the slightly taxing parts, but also the most fun — to get to be a kid again and go into the depths of your imagination and play around. This, being there with the orchestra and hearing the score sort of come to life and what the feel of the movie was going to be at different parts was like, "Oh, OK, now I really get what we're doing." So that was definitely a moment for me. It was the first time I met Zach [Levi].
MTV: Does Zach actually sing in the film?
Moore: He does, and he's amazing! Oh my God, we had one rehearsal before we went into the studio, and I was so interested [in him], because they wanted to cast actors in the roles who could also sing, and I had no idea that he sang, and it turns out he's like a big musical-theater nut and had that in his background. He has a beautiful voice, but he has the perfect voice for something like this. He's such a sweet guy, and he's so funny in the movie, but I think his voice will astonish people, like, "Wow, where did that come from?"
From the saucy Jessica Alba in "Little Fockers" to James Franco's grueling journey in "127 Hours," the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films' biggest stars.

Rihanna Ties Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Mariah Carey For #1 Pop Songs

'Love the Way You Lie' with Eminem becomes her sixth #1 on the pop chart.By Jocelyn Vena

Rihanna is making hit songs, breaking records and taking names. The singer is currently tied with a few of her pop comrades for the most #1 songs on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart. She ties with Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Mariah Carey for the most #1's in the Nielsen survey. Rihanna now has six #1's on her résumé thanks to her chart-topping collaboration with Eminem, "Love the Way You Lie," according to Billboard.com.
Rihanna's other #1 songs on the pop chart include 2006's "SOS" (for one week); 2008's "Take a Bow" (for three weeks); 2008's "Disturbia" (three weeks); her late-2008 T.I. collabo "Live Your Life" (two weeks); and this year's "Rude Boy" (two weeks). "Love the Way You Lie" has been on top for one week so far.
Earlier this year Beyoncé and Lady Gaga tied Mariah Carey for six #1 pop songs with their collaboration, "Telephone." Carey had six songs hit #1 on the Hot 100 before the Pop Songs chart was created in 1993, and then six others since its creation. Meanwhile, Beyoncé collected hers from 2003 to 2010. Gaga was the fastest to tie the record, with all six released from 2009-2010.
Avril Lavigne, Pink, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake all come in a close second with five #1 pop songs in their careers.
Rihanna had fans talking last week when the video for "Love the Way You Lie" was released. The singer, who was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009, appears in the video that depicts a violent love affair between Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox.
How do you think Rihanna compares to the other women at the top of the pop chart? Sound off in the comments.

Kim Kardashian Weighs In On Justin Bieber Photo Controversy

'Everyone's loved it. It was all in fun,' she says, responding to Bill O'Reilly's criticism of 'Graduate'-inspired shoot.By Jocelyn Vena

If only Justin Bieber were 18, then he might have a shot at scoring a date with his pal and Elle photo-shoot partner, Kim Kardashian. When the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star stopped by "Lopez Tonight" on Tuesday night, she admitted that if their age difference wasn't so large (she's 29, he's 16), she might be attracted to the chart-topping, mop-headed pop singer.

"If he was of legal age, I said Justin Bieber has, like, this swag to him," she said, according to E! Online. "You just have to meet him. He definitely has this swag to him."
While the "Graduate"-inspired photo shoot of the pair frolicking on the beach seems pretty harmless, TV pundit Bill O'Reilly found the photos inappropriate and criticized them.
For her part, Kardashian doesn't see the controversy in the photos. "I thought that the shoot was all in fun. We had a good time," she said on "Lopez." "Everyone's entitled to their own opinion on it, but we were just having a good time and the amazing creative team at Elle magazine obviously thought it was a great shoot. Everyone's loved it.
It was all in fun.'
Bieber, however, may have some competition. Kardashian teases that there might already be someone special in her life. She said, "You never know. Maybe someone has [come into my life]. You never know."
Earlier this year, when he stopped by VMA host Chelsea Handler's talk show, "Chelsea Lately," Bieber admitted he wouldn't mind scoring a date with the reality starlet. "Well, I mean, she actually said, or Kim said, 'I think Justin Bieber should date my sister,' " he recalled of Kardashian trying to set up Biebs with her younger sister. "And I was like, 'I think I should date you.' "
Handler may have summed it up best when she quipped, "Basically, what's happening is, you made it OK to flirt with underage people."

'Machete' Cast Thinks Lindsay Lohan's 'Gonna Be All Right'

Lohan's co-stars praise the performance by the actress, who recently left rehab.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner

Most of the cast of "Machete" was on hand in Los Angeles on Wednesday (August 25) to celebrate the premiere of their B-movie-inspired, Robert Rodriguez-directed flick. But one of the film's stars was noticeably absent: Lindsay Lohan, who had been released from rehab a day earlier. The young actress' road to recovery was on the mind of her co-stars.

"You know what, I just care about her as a person," Don Johnson told MTV News on the red carpet. "God bless her and she's gonna do fine." That sentiment was mirrored by Danny Trejo, who added, "Get home, girl! You're gonna be all right. She's gonna be fine. She knows what to do."
Another one of the flick's stars, Cheech Marin, wanted to let Lohan know he supports her, and that he hopes this incident will be a catalyst for her getting her life back on track. "I wish her all the best. I mean, she's a talented young actress," he said. "Hopefully, she won't let her personal life overwhelm her professional life ... at some point, you gotta be responsible."
Michelle Rodriguez felt that publicly wishing Lindsay the best would not just benefit her former co-star. "I just think everybody should have in mind that when you wish the best for people around you, it only makes your country, your society, your culture better," she explained. "So I think that we should all just respect the evolutionary paths of people and as much as we possibly can wish for the better, for light."
Earlier in the night, Jessica Alba praised Lohan, saying, "She's so good in this movie. I can't wait for people to see [her in] it."
Praise for Lohan's performance also came from the film's director. "She's awesome in the movie. That's what they'll see: the actress behind all that paparazzi nonsense that follows her and won't leave her alone," Robert Rodriguez said. "They'll get to see her and say, 'Oh, that's why we follow her around.' "
Check out everything we've got on "Machete."
